snOMG! Please stop snowing or cancel work!

Seriously- snOMG came back last night. and it still heaving down on us.

Basement progress- It looks like a totally different basement! There is drywall everywhere and it looks beautiful. Pictures updated later today since alas the camera is at home and I was too lazy to post last night.

Question-
The walls are going to be painted a really pretty light gray. (think Silver Dust)
WTH do I do about carpet color???
I don't want something almost white(eek stains!)
I want something durable and yet still comfy to walk on and help keep the room warm.
But what color???
We are also doing a dark gray stone like tile around the bar and the wood in the room is white for the trim and doors but the pool table and bar will be a Black Cherry stained Oak.

I want it all to flow and look nice together. Is that too much to ask?

Please help!

Back to Work

Construction resumes today and I'm hoping to see drywall up when I get home from work. We had a fairly relaxing weekend and enjoyed the company of great friends on Saturday.

I did manage to get in just a little bit of knitting, just enough to satisfy me for the week. That Celtic Cable Neckwarmer? It's done :) I actually didn't get to work on it at all on Saturday so I plunked down on the couch during the Super Bowl and knit away. Had to tear out the last 8 rows because I had way too much yarn leftover so I added more cables to use up more yarn and make it longer.

The ends have been woven in and all it needs is a nice blocking to give it a more even shape and some buttons.

But it does fit! And I think it's pretty cute. Should look great under my red pea coat with my cream beret.

Ignore the Double Pointed Needle that I'm using to pin it together. Hopefully I can find some cute natural brown/leather buttons this week and sew those babies on.

Here is a more accurate pic of the color- the lighting was terrible when I took those above pics! It's not nearly as "yellow" as it appears up there. It's more heavy cream than yellow cake in color.

A little bit of knitting... and some other stuff

So Emily demanded that I take more pictures to share. Of both the home improvement and the knitting (if I got any done) So of course I'm happy to oblige.

The guys hard at work on Wed. night- see the dust specs flashing in my camera?

P envisioning his bar- again with the dust!

How we left it Wednesday night. The magnificent hole had been filled in, the bathroom (that stuff on the far right) had been framed and electrical run, and the front of the bar framed and the "bar back" framed. Steps still look the same.

And this is what I came home to yesterday! The steps were turned, the bar is built, all electric run to the bar (gotta have a place to plug in the mixer!!) and OMG they swept the floors! Not much dust at all!!!
Can I just say how much I love love the new landing? They put a half wall that runs down the stairs and even with the one step down. It's perfect and will allow for a better flow into the room so we didn't just have a wall that randomly stopped. it's created a little cubby at the end of the bar between the steps and the bar. P has claimed that little "nook" as his favorite spot in the basement.

Even Chloe wanted to check things out... she is that (giant) black and white spot at the top of the steps- seriously, she has a weight problem (18ish lbs?). She's a little sensitive about it.Best not to mention it.

And yes, I did get some knitting done. I didn't want to start anything big since the knitting Olympics are starting in a week. But I wanted something I hadn't done before and I wanted to try and use from my stash. So hopefully I have enough left over from my Slouchy Beret so make this Celtic Neckwarmer. I got 50 rows done and actually managed to read from the chart.

When it's done it should look something like this:

To quote Britt
: snOMG! is on it's way. We are expecting somewhere between 4 and 12 inches of snow. I've heard 4-8, I've heard 6-12... who knows what will happen. I don't care either way, but please don't let it be icy!

A bar and a bathroom

Wow, progress is really a great thing. I am amazed at the transformation of our wide open basement space into a livible, breatheable space. Well, don't breathe down there yet- you may inhald 4lbs of concrete dust and sawdust.

Again, no pictures till later but let me just tell you that it is amazing. We actually have a bathroom! and a bar frame! The space is literally evolving right before our eyes. The guys were turning the steps this morning when I left for work. Once that is done they are going to set up for drywall so they are ready to rock and roll next week. They are leaving us today but have no fear! They will be back on Monday... well, Dave won't, but that's because he is almost done till we get the ceiling grid and tiles in.

One slight issue that I have had with the whole process is that I find myself downstairs just staring and watching the guys work instead of knitting! I haven't touched any needles since Sunday! and I'm pretty sure that I'm going through withdrawls. I don't know if it's because I'm scared the dust will infect my project or I'm just in awe at the guys working. Either way, I need to knit something before I forget how!

Luckily there is more White Death coming into town this weekend so hopefully I can bundle up in the house and knit my little heart out till they return on Monday.

Happy Thursday!

I think I've got the Black Lung, Pop!

Post Update: Photos added at the end :)

Forgive the lack of photos in today's post. My camera is currently at home under a layer of concrete dust... oh yeah, and the guys need it to keep snapping away at the work they are doing.

But the dust.... it has a mind of it's own. I received a warning phone call from P letting me know there was a fine layer of gray over everything. And we aren't talking about the basement here. Apparently when you use a saw and jackhammer to break up and remove concrete- even if you barricade the door with sheets and turn the vents down to interrupt air flow- the dust gets out. And infects everything it can get to. Seriously. Chloe aged about 40 years in the course of a work day. Even she couldn't escape the wrath of the dust. I won't even attempt to clean off the counters and tables. Because supposedly, it will return with the drywall installation. So just forgive me for the madness right now. I can't help it!

But in great news, Dave made it down safe and sound- we've got outlets up and he is working the wiring for the can lights and dimmers today. The concrete proved to be more difficult than anticipated but they made it work. There is a fabulous hole in the basement (quite impressive actually) and the new pipes have been run for the potty and the sink for the bathroom.

I think today is some more electrical work, re-pouring of concrete, and perhaps framing the bathroom and bar?

Oh yeah and the drywall gets delivered today! Who knows- at the pace these guys are working- for reals, they are like machines!- we may get some drywall up this week!

The delightful hole I was talking about:

Yes, those are Chloe prints! In. my. living room.

See those sheets on the dusty floor back there?

They are pointing to where the basement is. (to the left) The dust crept through the sheets, around the corner and attacked the living room!

Holy Ish! It has begun!

Look at what I came home to from work on Monday!

that's Bob. Hi Bob!

Considering this is what I left when I went to work on Monday I would say that OMG they are fast!!! The outside walls are totally framed. Ready to run some electric!

We are so excited to see everything come to fruition! We have laid out the plans for the bathroom and the bar and everything seems to be in order. When I return from work on Tuesday who knows what I'll see!

There's Another Her...

Yes, you heard me correct. Another lady has stolen my husband's heart. Actually, I'm kinda sweet on her too.

Allow me to introduce you to Megan:

She will be joining us in 4 short weeks and take her place as a centerpiece in our new basement.

She'll have a wardrobe change though and be showcased in a fabulous Black Cherry Finish with either a Burgundy or Red cloth cover (We get to pick when she gets here!)

We've officially begun the basement- no turning back now. Megan needs a fabulous home!

Right now, as I sit here in the office, the guys are on their way to begin the transformation. We are so unbelievably excited and grateful that we have such awesome family and friends that can help us out.

Now I just need to keep the brown paper bag handy to breathe into when I feel faint... like now.
